Professor Edward Orton Jr. founded the nation's first Department of Ceramic Engineering at the Ohio State University in 1894. George Wesley Bellows was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1882. He attended Ohio State University, leaving in 1903 for New York where he enrolled at William Chase's New York School of Art under the instruction of Robert Henri. He became Associate Member of the National Academy in 1908 and Academician in 1918. In 1910 he married a fellow student at the school, Emma Story. WIlliam Oxley Thompson was born in Cambridge, Ohio on November 5, 1855. He received an A.B. in 1878 and a D.D. in 1891 from Muskingum College. On April 13, 1881, Thompson was licensed by the Presbytery of Zanesville at Dresden, Ohio. He served as a home missionary and pastor in Odebolt, Iowa from 1882 to 1885.
